About

Primarily a graphite realism artist and oil painter, Appa tries to use different mediums to give form to thought. If that wasn’t vague enough, it is mostly a concept that is portrayed instead of a direct image of the original idea.

Sometimes the original idea can be as basic as beauty or horror. It can be a very personal experience or a more universaly applicable one. Whatever the original idea was or the meaning that Appa sees in his work, he holds to the idea that this meaning is irrelevant. There is no ‘true’ meaning behind the work, it is subjective and it is unique to each person who sees it.

Currently working from his studio in Groningen in the Netherlands he is constantly expanding his body of work and now also sharing his work to engage with a larger audience.

“I have to materialise my thoughts in some way. Wether it be through painting, writing or anything else it must be taken out of my mind and printed on an external medium.

Not doing so results in al sorts of nastiness that I have come to know well. Yet it is more than just printing a thought. By taking it out of the relative safety of my mind and portraying it in a way that it can be interpreted by someone else, it makes it more real. I am making that part of me available to anyone willing to see it and by doing so pushing myself to continue to confront myself with it.

I therefore thank anyone who has seen my paintings or anything else I have made. Because by taking the time to look at it, nevermind how long or in depth, you have truly made an impact on me.”
